Sasha and Edna have been in Japan for more than a week! They spent this weekend with their second host family. So I’ll take this weekend off as well! Phew! But just a few pictures taken at their homes will be shown here.
２人にとって今週末は、来日してから２度目の週末で、それぞれに2軒目のホストファミリーと一緒に過ごしています。よって、このサイトも一休みです。しかし、これまでに彼女たちから送られてきたホストファミリーとの写真を一部紹介しておきます。日にちは前後します。
Takoyaki dinner
Sasha was having dinner with her first host family. You can see a takoyaki hot plate on the table. Tako-yaki literally means octopus cooked, one of causal Japanese food. It is a kind of fried dumpling made of a wheat flour base batter, so it is like octopus in the dough. Takoyaki is cooked using a special Takoyaki pan in front of you, as seen in the picture.
サーシャは、ホストファミリーとたこ焼きを自分たちで焼いて食べたところが、楽しかったようです。この写真の他にも、彼女は、たこ焼きを熱心に焼いている写真を何枚も送ってくれました。
Here Edna was having dinner with her second host family. They also have an electric hot plate on the table, just like a small BBQ grill. Japanese style BBQ is called Yakiniku and literary means grilled meat in Japanese. It’s a popular dish originated from Korea. Whether you are enjoying Yakiniku meal at home or in a restaurant, everyone sits around the BBQ grill and cooks the meat and vegetables throughout the meal.
こちらは、エドナーがホストファミリーと一緒に焼肉ディナーを食べているところですね。家族がそろって目の前で焼いて食べるお肉の味は極上だったようです。外で行うアメリカのＢＢＱパーティーとは趣が違っていますね。
Sasha’s host mother was dressing Sasha in a summer kimono, called Yukata. You can find people wearing Yukata at summer festivals all over the country.
サーシャはホストマザーにゆかたを着せてもらっています。初めて着たゆかたに感激したようです。
Edna tried whitewater rafting with her host family in Nagatoro, which is located within two hours from Tokyo, a tourist spot surrounded by a beautiful natural environment. Rafting down the Nagatoro River is one of the main attractions in Nagatoro. She was scared at first but had so much fun and excitement!
Sasha went to the Nikko Toshogu shrine with her host family. This Shinto shrine is a part of “Shrines and Temples of Nikko”, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This photo was taken below the famous “Three Monkeys” for the “see no evil, hear no evil and speak no evil.” There is a series of 8 carved boards on which the life of a monkey is illustrated, from birth to pregnancy, caricaturing human life. In fact, the work is quite small, compared to the impression you might get from the photo in your guide book!
