Nancy and Candice were at the Fratto (parent-child support center) this morning. Any pairs of a mother and her child in the neighboring community can come to the Fratto to play in the room and talk with other pairs to get to know each other, while Bunkyo students majoring in ECE can observe mother-child interactions and interview mothers. Today we talked about children’s cross-cultural awareness and spent the last 30 minutes demonstrating how to read English books to toddlers, followed by singing some finger play songs. Many children rolled their eyes when they heard words in English.

今日から２週目が始まりました。二人は「ふらっと」での「子育て講座」に参加してくれました。今日は幼児の異文化の気づきについて話をした後で、幼児向けの英語の読み聞かせと手遊びを集まったお母さん方と一緒にやって楽しみました。英語の音に反応する子どもたちがかわいかったですね。

After the sing-along session, the students stayed in the room interacting with toddlers and their moms. They were good at communicating with children non-verbally. In this photo, Candice was asked to read the Very Hungry Caterpillar by these boys.

講座が終わってからも、二人には「ふらっと」でゆっくり過ごしてもらいました。ことばをまだ話さない子どもたちとかかわるのは、２人ともとても上手です。キャンディスは、この子たちに「はらぺこあおむし」の本を指さされ、読んであげていました。

This boy was watching Nancy playing with a ball and slowly moving to her. He finally had a big smile on his face when he touched the ball!

こちらは、ナンシーがボールで遊んでいるところに興味を持った子が、だんだん近づいて行っているところです。お母さんの助けもありましたが、無事ボールをもらって喜んでいました。

At lunch time, they met four students from Malaysia. These students were welcomed by the faculty and the students from the department of Medical Health Care and Technology. They stay in the dorm on Hongo campus in Tokyo and have their internships at the hospital.

昼休みには、マレーシアからの4人の留学生の歓迎会に呼ばれました。彼女たちは保健医療技術学部に来た留学生で、本郷の留学生会館での滞在なので会う機会はないのが残念です。こちらの４人には、病院での実習がこれから待っているようです。
