In the afternoon they participated in the art class taught by Prof. Shobuzawa. She arranged class activity so that the students can experience Suiboku-ga (India ink painting). It indicates one of the art forms in which subjects are painted with black ink in all possible gradations ranging pure black to the lightest shades achievable by dissolving ink in water. Natural scenes, birds and flowers are often selected for the subjects. They tried to paint bamboo and bamboo leaves, or something else?
午後からは、造形表現のクラスに参加させてもらいました。今年から菖蒲澤先生にお願いして、二人を受け入れてもらいました。先生の推薦で、二人にも水墨画を体験してもらうことになりました。墨の濃淡を使って自然にある鳥や花を描く手法です。菖蒲澤先生の竹を描く姿をじっくり観察し、二人も早速試していました。竹に見えなくはないですが、それとも何か他の物を描いているのかもしれません！

The last class they visited was my senior thesis class. Cabrillo students were welcomed to come to the class where eleven students would like to discuss a variety of issues related to ECE in both countries. Their discussion topics included cultural sensitivity needed in early childhood learning and development, home-school continuity, stranger danger around schools to keep children safe, unseen conflict resolution in Japan, and their favorite food such as home-made miso (soybean paste) and natto (fermented soybean). We all have fun talking with them.
今日の最後は、私の４年生ゼミのクラスでした。学生たちは幼児教育と保育に関しての様々な視点でのディスカッションを、カブリヨの学生とできることを楽しみにしていました。と言うのも、学生たちは、ちょうど最後の実習から戻ってきたばかりだったからです。ディスカッションの話題は多岐に渡りましたが、主なものは外国籍の子どもがいた場合の対応の仕方の難しさ、家庭と学校の継続性、不審者から子どもの安全をどう守れるか、日本ではいざこざ解決に先生があまり関与しないのはなぜ、二人が気に入った日本の食べ物は自家製みその味と納豆でした。とっても楽しい時間となりました。
