今日はLinscott Charter Schoolに行っている10名の報告です。チャータースクールとは親や教員、そして地域のリーダーたちの意志と支援で成り立っているアメリカ特有の公立学校です。Ｋ、１年生、２年生を中心に各クラスに２人ずつ実習させてもらいました。Rainbow roomと呼ばれているこのクラスは１～３年が混在しているクラスでした。Stationsという時間では、それぞれのテーブルで異なる活動を一人ずつ大人がついて行っていました。

Reports today are from 10 students who were having internships at Linscott Charter School. A charter school is a public school, and it is usually created or organized by a group of teachers, parents and community leaders. Five pairs of students were in a kindergarten, two 1st grade, two 2nd grade, and one mixed-age classes. A mixed-age class called Rainbow Room has 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade children. For small group activities, called Stations, each table was organized by a parent or an volunteer.

その後の音楽の時間は音楽室に移動して、子どもたちが音楽で練習してきた演奏を披露してくれました。結構、たくさんの親が見に来ていました。観客がいると子どものやる気も違うようです。

For their music class, children moved to the music room and play while relatively quite a large audience at the concert. The children looked excited to play some musical instruments in front of their parents.

こちらの１年生のクラスでも、小グループでの活動が行われていました。箸をつかって、数を数えたり、日本語で数字を発音して書く練習をしていました。習字の真似事は前にもやっているようでした。四を書くのが難しかったようですね。

In the 1st grade class, they were practicing numbers using chopsticks and also writing numbers in Chinese characters like Japanese calligraphy. If you’re interested in reading and writing Chinese characters, there’s no better place to get started than with the numbers 1-10. They are quite simple to write but a number 4, 四、was the one many children had a hard time writing.

こちらのテーブルでは、折り紙でカップを作ったり、ペンギンを作って歓声が上がっていました。本当に簡単なものしか作れなくて、日本の子どもの手先の器用さをあらためて知ったのでした。担任の先生が、学生たちのやることを一日のスケジュールの中に組み入れて考えてくれていてるがうれしいです。

In this table, children enjoyed folding origami-paper. They made simple origami models of a cup and a penguin out of a square paper. Students noticed that even 1st graders cannot fold the paper in half precisely while in Japan 3-year-olds can do it well. It was grateful that the classroom teacher incorporated students’ activities into her daily teaching.

ここは、２年生のクラスですが、学生たちは２年生たちに溶け込んでいるようで、どこに座っているかわかるでしょうか。ここでは、お父さんが手伝いに来ていました。

In the 2nd grade class, two students seemed to blend in with other 2nd graders. Can you find them? One of children’s Dads was a parent-helper today.
