今日の午前中は、カブリヨ大学の近くにあるマー・ビスタ小学校の見学でした。二つのグループに分かれて、幼稚部から６年生（K-6）までのクラスを見学し、授業の一部を見せてもらいながら日本への質問などを受けました。写真の１年生のクラスは、小学校には少ないと校長先生が強調していた男性教員が、このように迎えてくれました！　どこのクラスの先生も、学生たちが将来日本で先生になることを目指していると言うと、一層親しみを感じてくれます。

We went to Mar Vista Elementary School today. The students in two groups visited several classes from K to 6 to see what children were learning and how children’s activities were organized in the classrooms. Children looked very curious about Japan and asked the students a lot of questions in some classes such as “What is the name of your school?” “Do you have MacDonald in Japan?”, and “Is there Ninja in Japan?”. This 1st grade teacher was very energetic!  In fact, in every class we visited, the students received a warm welcome, and the classroom teacher in particular really got excited to hear that these students want to become teachers!

２年生のこのクラスは、Reading & Writingの時間でした。小グループに分かれての活動が小学校でも多いようですが、この時間はちょうど一斉授業をみることができました。「タツノオトシゴは生き残っていくためにどんな適応をしているのか」（Sea horses have several adaptations for survival）という質問に子どもたちはどんどん手をあげていましたね。読んだ本についての理解を深めるためのディスカッションだったのでしょう（Book clubsという活動）。子どもたちの答えを先生は紙にまとめて書いていました。こうやって一緒に勉強すると学生たちの英語力も上がりそうですね！

In this 2nd grade class, we observed whole class activities led by the teacher. Many children raised their hands to answer the question, “Sea horses have several adaptations for survival. What are they?”  They discussed the book they have read in class. The students were very impressed with the way the whole class ran, and how the children were engaged. In Japan, whole-class teaching is traditionally common although this method has been criticized because of the notion that every child is different. We have to rethink about that! Teachers can make a difference!

これは体育のクラス（PE class）で、体育の専科の先生が教えていました。ドッジボールのようなルールでやわらかいボールを外枠の人が中にいる人に向けて投げるゲームに参加させてもらっているところです。心地よい汗を流して、最後は子どもたちと”High Five”（ハイタッチ）をやって終わりました。体を動かして子どもたちとかかわるのは得意ですよね！

We also participated in one of the PE classes. The students seemed to relax because they didn’t have to feel language barriers while they were doing exercises!  They enjoyed moving around in the field and gave high fives at the end.

このオレンジ色のベストを着ている子たちは、５年生のリサイクルプロジェクトで、昼休みのごみの分別をしていました。男の子のベストの背中には、”Operation. Go Green TEAM”と書いてあり、「リサイクルは学校をよりよくするためのプロジェクトなんだ」と誇らしげに語ってくれました！

These 5th graders wearing orange vests were working hard to sort their recycling from the trash during lunch time. One of the boys proudly told me that this is a lunchtime recycling project to make our school better.
