今日からいよいよ実習が始まりました。今日と明日は、小学校で一日子どもたちと一緒に過ごします。こちらの学校では、K-クラスに２人ずつ分かれて入り、異なる先生のもとで参観と部分実習をやらせてもらいます。このクラスの先生は男の先生で、早速二人の学生に、日本についての質問を子どもたちに投げかけていました。アメリカと日本の小学校の違いや、日本では子どもたちは何をして遊ぶのが好きかなど、たくさん聞かれていましたね。自分たちでちゃんと答えられないのが、実に残念です！！

The students go to two elementary schools, Linscott Charter School for 10 students and Del Mar School for 6 students for their internships this Monday and Tuesday. In Del Mar, three pairs of two go to three different Kindergarten classes. In this photo, two students were asked about Japan such as “Are there any differences between Japanese schools and American schools?” and “What do children in Japan do for fun?”  The students would not have been able to answer these questions without a translator who happened to be there. It was pitiful!

こちらのクラスでは、グループごとに分かれて、それぞれのテーマで勉強していました。このグループでは「食べられる植物を５つ見つけて、書くこと」が課題でした。学生たちは子どもたちの援助がうまくできたでしょうか。今週のテーマが「植物」で、学校の庭に種を植える活動も待っているようでした。

In this class, a group of children was working on their assignment. They were supposed to write 5 plants that they can eat because the theme of the current unit is plants. The front board says “We will plant front garden bed this week.”  We hope these students were able to help the kids writing.

こちらのクラスは午前の休み時間になり、一緒に外に出ていくところです。先生を先頭に列になって、グランド・遊具エリアまで行って、自由遊びとなります。学生たちは一緒に遊ぶのは得意です！　十分に遊んだあとは、学習意欲も出てくるようです！

Children were ready to have a blast on the play yard during their recess as they walked through the halls. These students were following them and playing hard with them. When kids have fun and move around at recess, they’re ready to learn when they get back in the classroom.

この学生は、子どもが指差している水たまりの中の小さなあぶくを見逃さなかったようです。うまく意思疎通ができなくても、指をさして訴えていることはわかりますね。よく子どもを見ていることが子ども理解の基本になります！

This student noticed the boy pointing at a tiny bubble in the puddle. She may have a hard time communicating with him but was trying to understand what he is curious about.  We need to watch closely and listen carefully in order to recognize and understand the child’s needs and interests. Then we need to join with them in what they are doing.

休み時間終了後は「おやつの時間」になります。朝ご飯を食べてこない子がいるために、このようにお昼前におやつの時間があることを先生が教えてくれました。結構しっかり食べている子がいましたね。

After recess, there is snack time and then lunch in one and a half hours. One teacher said that’s because some children don’t have breakfast at home so they need some snack before lunch. The students were surprised to see children having snack at elementary school.
