今日の午前中はマービスタ小学校の見学をしました。来週の月火に、7人の学生がここで実習を行います。今日はたまたま学期の最後の日で、全校で朝ごはんを食べてお祝いをしているところに参加させてもらいました。その日は、パジャマで登校することが許されている「パジャマディ」とも呼ばれているようです。よって、カフェテリアで私たちの紹介をしてくれた校長も、パジャマ姿でした！
We visited Mar Vista Elementary School in the morning. Next Monday and Tuesday 7 students will have their internships in this school. Today happened to be their school-wide breakfast celebrating the end of the second trimester. So we were invited to the breakfast at the cafeteria. It was also pajama day, so students and some staff were wearing their pajamas to school. Of course the principle who introduced Bunkyo students to the children at the cafeteria was wearing his pajama. He said, “This is my favorite dress up day of the year!”

カフェテリアでは私たちの席も用意されていて、お茶目な校長が一緒に写真を撮りたいと来てくれました。
We had pancakes and milk with the children at the cafeteria. Thanks to the friendly principle, we all enjoyed a unique and unforgettable experience!

朝食後、見学が始まりました。これは1年生のクラスです。元気な先生が迎えてくれ、子どもたちが日本語に興味を持っていることを教えてくれました。「こんにちは」「ありがとう」「どうぞ」を、みんな上手に言えてましたね。中央にいる二人（ジンスさんの隣）は６年生で、私たちのツアーのガイドをするように校長に頼まれたようでした。６年生になると、学校の手伝いをすることも学習の一つになるようです。とてもしっかりした上級生でスムーズに周ることができました。
After the breakfast, the school tour began. We were in the first grade class in this photo and observed Mr. P’s lively teaching style. The teacher told us that the children have been interested in learning Japanese. They nicely repeated words like Konnichiwa (Hello) Arigato (Thank you), and Dozo (Please). Two girls in the middle next to Jinsu were 6th graders who were asked by the principle to be the tour guides of our group. They said they like to work to help school. They did an excellent job.

休み時間には、校庭でバスケットをしたり、このように片隅ではダンスを披露してくれるグループもいて、大いに盛り上がっていました。小学生と大学生の交流には見えないほどの気の合いようが、なんとも複雑な気持ちにさせます！
During morning recess, they played basketball together on the playground. This group of people, however, enjoyed dancing themselves, watching them dance, and even dancing along with them. Elementary school children seemed to get along well with college students from Japan. This implies that elementary school kids here are more mature than the children their own age or college students from Bunkyo are immature for their age, or both?

こちらは６年生のクラスです。日本のことについてたくさんの質問が出ました。特に、先生からの質問は学生たちが先生になるもあり、日本の学校制度のことを聞いていましたね。小学校では掃除当番という制度があり、自分の教室は自分たちできれいにするという話が気に入ったようで、子どもたちにもう一度言ってほしいと頼まれたほどでした。アメリカにはない制度です。しかし、子どもたちの反応はいまいちでした。
This is a 6th grade classroom. They asked us a lot of questions about Japan. In particular, since they knew the students would become preschool and elementary school teachers, there were many questions about Japanese school systems. Among them, one thing I explained appeared to attract the teacher’s attention, so she asked me to repeat it while she told her students to listen carefully. That was that at Japanese elementary schools, students daily clean their own classrooms. Everyone has a cleaning duty once a week. The teacher liked the idea very much but the children didn’t.
