カブリヨ大学の子どもセンターでの最初の観察が行われました。観察室に入る前に、Jean（去年文京に来てくれたカブリヨ大学のECE教員）からセンターの概要を聞きました。このセンターは、主にカブリヨ大学の学生の子どもを預かることと、ECE専攻の学生の実習の場所としての２つの目的をもっています。乳児、幼児期前期、幼児期後期の３つのクラスがあります。
Before going to observe the classes in the Cabrillo College Children’s Center, Jean, a full-time faculty of ECE department (who came to Bunkyo last October as a visiting scholar), gave us a brief information on the Center. Cabrillo College supports the Children’s Center for two reasons: to provide child care for student and staff families and to give students in the Early Childhood Education program a place to practice the teaching methods they are learning in classes. There are three classes for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers.

学生の質問に答えて、それぞれのクラスの先生や実習生の数を黒板に書いてくれて、やっと全容がわかりましたね。日本とは違って実習生もレベルがあって、複雑です。インターンと呼ばれている実習生は担当の子どももいてお金ももらえます。システムの違いなどはなかなかすぐには理解ができないでしょうが、そういうことを踏まえて観察ができたのは次につながったのではないでしょうか。
Jean wrote down the number of teachers, interns, and student teachers in each class and further explained that each child is assigned a primary caregiver to ensure his or her needs are being met by the program. The Bunkyo students seemed to get their ideas and had good observations today.

ここでは、一切子どもの写真を撮ることができないので、２階の教室からプリスクールの子どもたちの外遊び場を撮ったものです。
We can’t take any pictures in the classrooms, but this is the outdoor preschool classroom, the picture taken outside of the classroom upstairs.

Jeanのガイドで各教室を１０分ぐらいずつ回り、その後個別に３０分ほどの自由観察の時間を取りました。学生たちは好きなクラスの観察室に入って、マジックミラー越しの観察を終えて、教室に帰ってきました。そこで、観察の振り返りと２回目の観察に向けてのテーマ絞りの話をしました。
The students spent about 30 minutes observing classes and came back to the room to reflect on their observations. We also discussed guided observation they will do on Thursday.
