今日は、カブリヨ大学子どもセンターでの２回目の観察を行いました。二人一組で、同じ対象児の観察を３０分ｘ２回行い、その後に観察ノートを照らし合わせて観察の観点の違いや解釈の違いなどを、教室にもどって発表してもらいました。このような行動観察記録からの問題提起や討論は、子ども理解にとってとても大事な役割を果たすと考えられています。さらにそこに、プリスクールの主任であるメリサンドに来てもらって、学生からの質問に答えてもらいました。

The students had a guided observation this morning.  They were asked to make a pair and find a focused child in the infant, toddler, or preschool classroom.  Then they observed what the child was doing and how he/she interacted with teachers and other children over time, and were asked to interpret the observed behavior and to give it meaning.  Why did the child behave as he or she did?  This interpretation takes knowledge and skill.  Though an observation may be factual and unbiased, various interpretations are sometimes made.  Since no two people are exactly alike, no two people will interpret facts in the exact same way.  So after they came back to the classroom for reflection and discussion, the students in a pair compared their notes and interpretations.  Melisande, a master teacher in the preschool class, joined us for discussion and Qs and As.

メリサンドは学生たちの発表に熱心に耳をかたむけながら、丁寧に質問に答えてくれました。例えば、各教室の室温は何度に設定されているのか、おむつ替えの考え方、プラスチックのおもちゃに本物が混ざっている訳、ごっこ遊びコーナーの重要性、パンツ一枚でいてもいい理由等が挙がっていました。

Melisande listened to what the students observed and answered their questions such as a room temperature in each classroom, changing diapers, real objects versus plastic toys, the dramatic play area, and children wearing only underpants in the toddler classroom.

皆さん、メリサンドの説明に納得していたようですね。今日やったような行動観察が子どもの発達や理解に、さらには、それを踏まえていい先生になるためにも大事であることを学びました。

子どもたちがみんな帰ってから、プリスクールの教室内を見せてくれることになりました。環境設定等がみられる機会を与えてくれました。

After all the children in the preschool classroom were gone, Jean and Melisande gave us an opportunity to go into the classroom to see the environmental settings in the classroom.

この教室の現在のテーマは「海」だそうです。観察室からではよくわからなかった教材等を手に取ってみることができたのは、よかったですね。

The theme in this room is “ocean” now.  It was good for the students to see the things more closely.
