■ Cabrillo College（アメリカ カリフォルニア州 サンタクルーズ） での海外短期フィールドワークです。

後半は、実際に教室で使っている教材を体験するワークショップでした。「ウーブレック」と呼ばれているコーンスターチと水をミックスしてつくる物質は、今年も学生たちに人気でした。液体と固体の中間物質という気味悪さがいいのでしょうね。自分たちが実際に作ってみる体験をしてみると、意外に簡単にできることがわかりましたね。
After the break, the students spent a lot of time playing with some materials they prepared for us. One of them was Oobleck. Oobleck is a suspension of cornstarch and water that can behave like a solid or a liquid depending on how much pressure you apply. These students tried to grab some in their hand, and it formed a solid ball in their palm until they released the pressure. Then, it flew out between their fingers. They really liked to have a strange sense of something between liquid and solid.

こちらでは、小麦粉粘土を作っています。これは日本でもありますね。ここでは、毎週1週間分の小麦粉粘土をこうやって作って、子どもたちの教材にしているそうです。市販されている小麦粉粘土より、手作りの小麦粉粘土の方がきめが細かく、感触がずっといいのだそうです。
In this group, they were making playdough with flour, water, and salt. Cooked playdough has a better texture than uncooked ones. Playdough is a classic childhood toy everyone can have fun with, and it’s so easy to make at home.

こちらのテーブルには、実際に教室で使われている本が並べられています。クラスには様々な家族形態の子どもたちがいるので、ここにある「ママとママが結婚します」という本に出てくる子どもたちも自然に受け入れられているようです。
On this table, there were some books which were currently used in the preschool classroom. One of them to support pro diversity, for instance, is a book called “Mom and mom are getting married.”

残りの20分ほどは振り返りの時間でした。今日のワークショップで学んだこと、感じ入ったこと、実際にやってみたいことなどを書き入れるシートを作ってくれていました。その後、それをみんなで共有できたのもよかったですね。個人個人で詳細は報告書に書きましょう。
At the end of the workshop, the students were asked to write their reflections on today’s workshop and share them regarding what they learned, what touched their hearts, and what they wanted to walk out to do. Their detailed feedback will be written in the final papers.

今年も有意義な講義とワークショップを可能にしてくれたことに感謝いたします。特に、教材つくりを体験させてもらうために、材料などの準備が大変だったと想像します。おかげで、学生たちは多くを学び、楽しみました。これで来週からの実習も大丈夫ですね！
Thanks to Jean and Melisande, the students learned Cabrillo ECE’s theoretical and practical coursework to deepen understanding of children, their families, and the teaching and learning process. They also enjoyed playing with all the materials.
