週末の恒例のパーティーが、フランシスの家で開かれました。6時スタートとなっていましたが、みんなバラバラな時間にやってくるカジュアルな持ち寄りパーティーです。写真の学生たちの家族は時間より早めに来て、ホストのお手伝いを買って出ているのでしょう。ワヒラは、一生懸命にフランシスのお手伝いをしていました。
We had a pot-luck party at Frances’ house on the hill as usual. People were arriving at the party at different times. These students and their families were early arriving guests who were willing to help out with drinks and appetizers.

けんさんは、家族が都合で来れない家の学生を連れてきていました。家族は来れなくても、デザートを作って学生に持たせていました。参加者は何か一品持ってくることになっているからです。
Ken picked up the students and took them to the party. Their family was not able to come to the party, but they brought over some disserts. Everyone brings a dish to the party.

2軒の家族が来れませんでしたが、学生は全員集まって、他の家族との交流を楽しむ機会となりました。しかし、最初の自己紹介はなんとかできても、なかなかその後の会話が難しいようでした。それは英語に問題があるばかりではなく、日本語での対面でのコミュニケーションも、若い学生たちの間では少なくなっているからです。SNSやLINEのようなやり取りのみに変わってきていると言います。面と向かって人と話すことが過去の産物になっているのは、もちろんアメリカも同じで、社会全体がこの先どうなってしまうのか大人たちは憂い気味です。
Almost all families with all the students gathered in the party, and conversation gradually began, but the students had a hard time talking with others. Nowadays students communicate with each other via SNS, chat messages, and special apps on their smartphones. But face-to-face interaction is becoming something of the past! I think society on the whole is suffering. On top of that, they have to overcome language barriers.

ホストファミリー同士も、1年ぶりの再会を楽しんでいるようでした。数年前にホストしていたが、今年は学生の受け入れをしていない家族も来てくれていました。けんさんとジンスさんが、こういう家族同士の質の良いつながりを作り上げてくれ、それがこのプログラムが長く続いている大事な強みでもあります。
This was an annual host family gathering, so people who hadn’t seen each other all year had an opportunity to say hello here. The family hosted students in the past came to the party as well. Everybody knows everybody else: everyone is connected to each other through others. Ken and Jinsu have created the quality of such relationship which is the most impressive part of this program.

この写真の左に座っているのはある家族の息子さんですが、最初はまだ5歳くらいだった彼も、すっかり成長しています。他の家族の子どもたちも同様に大きくなって、巣立っていた家もあります。学生たちの影響もあり、彼は日本語を独学で勉強して、ずいぶん上手になっていました。
The man sitting on the left in the photo is a host brother of one of the families and he was about 5 years old when his family hosted the first students. He is quite grown-up now like other host brothers and sisters. He has been studying Japanese, so they can use both languages.
