こちらの二人はハイド小学校での実習です。ここは、今回初めて実習させてもいます。4つあるキンダーの内、2つがスペイン語と英語のイマ—ジョンクラスです。この二人の学生のホストマザーの紹介で、バイリンガル授業を体験できる機会となりました。子どもたちはほとんどスペイン語で話してきますが、みんな人懐っこいです。

Two students went to Hyde Elementary School for their internship.  There are 4 kindergarten classes and two of them are English-Spanish immersion classes.  These two students were in Eileen’s immersion class for two days.  Children speak in Spanish but they were very friendly to them.

バイリンガルの授業モデルはたくさんありますが、この学校で採用しているのは、90−10型というものです。キンダーから始まり、最初は９０％スペイン語、１０％英語で授業が行われ、学年が上がるにつれて、50−50型になり、5年生では読み書きも含めて2言語での到達目標にまでもっていくものです。キンダーに入った学生たちは、スペイン語をたくさん聞いていました！　特に、10までの数は覚えたのではないでしょうか。

There are two popular models of instruction: 90-10 and 50-50.  For Hyde, the students start kindergarten with 90% of the day taught in Spanish and 10% of the day in English.  In later grades the percentage changes to 50-50 in the fifth grade achieving literacy in both languages.  So Japanese students learned Spanish a lot today!

ホストマザーがスペイン語を教えてくれたこともあり、子どもたちの前でスペイン語で自己紹介ができたのは、よかったです！ぐっと子どもとの距離が近くなったようです。担任の先生は日本語にも興味をもっているようで、日本語のあいさつや10までの数を教えてほしいと、リクエストがありました。これくらいはできそうですね。頑張って！

Their host mother, Margaret, taught these students greetings in Spanish.  So they introduced themselves in Spanish!  Eileen asked them to teach some easy words and numbers in Japanese.  I hope they can do it well.
