今日の午前中は、カブリヨ大学併設子どもセンターでの見学実習でした。幼児教育学部の教員で、このプログラムの根幹を支えてくれているジーンが見学に先立って、カリフォルニアでの幼児教員制度や資格・免許のシステムを細かく教えてくれました。その後、3つのクラス（乳児、幼児前期、幼児後期クラス）を観察室から観察しました。この1回目の観察から、学生たちはどんなことを気づいたでしょうか。幼児教育教員の役割とはリサーチャーになること、と書かれたボードがありました。よく子どもを見て観察し、子どもたちが環境の中で、どう対応しているのかの記録をとることが大事だからでしょう。
We visited Cabrillo Children’s Center in the morning. Before our visitation, Jean, an ECE faculty member who has been a long-time organizer of this program, explained about the center and educational systems and requirements for ECE certification. The students learned how to become certified as an ECE teachers in California. We visited three rooms for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers. The students observed each class in the observation room. So I wonder what they noticed during their observation. Something interesting was up on the board; The teacher’s role is be a researcher. We observe and take note of the way children are using and being in the environment.

今日もよく晴れたいい日でした。この1年生5人組もランチが楽しそう！
It was a nice day today too! It’s like Eat Outside Day. These students were enjoying the days of warm summer-like weather and of course their lunch!

シェリー先生の英語の授業が始まりました。彼女のクラスはいつも活気があって、楽しんで学べます。手の動きとともに子どもの歌を歌う発表をしていました。自分たちが歌うだけではなく、それを他の人にも教えることも意図しているようでした。これからもっと練習が必要のようですね！
Sherrie, an ESL teacher, always gives attentive, lively, enjoyable English lessons to Bunkyo students. The students were singing children’s songs such as “Wheels on the Bus” and “Itsy Bitsy Spider” with hand motions and teaching how to sing them to other students. They need more time to practice!

動詞の過去形も復習していました。ゲームをやりながら動詞を過去の形に変えて、文章を言っていくのを競います。真剣な顔で取り組んでいる様子はゲーム遊びをしているとは思えないのですが、楽しんでいた人もいたようですね。毎日の会話の中によく出てくるのが動詞の過去形ですから、使えるようになるのは便利です。シェリーは、これをホストファミリー先でも練習ことを宿題にしていました。うまく練習できたでしょうか。もう一つ出た宿題は、ｒとｌの発音練習です。日本人にとっては難しい区別ですが、練習する価値は大いにあります！ 練習相手もすぐそばにいるのもうれしいですね。
They reviewed past tense verbs, both regular and irregular ones. By using Past Tense Talk Sheet, they played a game to compete the following sentences by selecting the correct past tense form of the word. We often talk about the past in everyday conversation, so past tense verbs are very useful in everyday conversation. So Sherrie gave the students some homework; they need to talk with their host families using past tense verbs. I hope it went well. Another homework was to practice pronunciation of the words with /r/ and /l/ sounds such as “Jerry’s jelly berries” and “Taste really rare.” It’s hard for Japanese, but it’s worth a try! The students are very fortunate to have someone at home to practice speaking with.
