2019/03/14

今日の午前中は、全員でリンズコット小学校を見学に行きました。リンズコットは、このプログラムの1回目から学生を受け入れてくれている関係の深い学校です。いつものように、来週は2つのクラスに2人ずつ入って実習もさせてもらいます。今日は見学ということで、低学年のクラスをいくつか見せてもらいました。例えば、レインボークラスという異年齢クラスでは、担任のリサ先生が、それぞれの子どもたちが一番必要としていることを引き出すためのグループ分けの工夫を話してくれました。一斉授業のメリット、個人を重視した学習のメリットは、いつも議論の的にもなることを考えさせられる経験になりました。

We were very excited about our first group visit to Linscott Charter School.  Bunkyo students have visited this school for more than 10 years.  Not only just visiting but also they had our students stay in their classes for a couple of days for their internships.  In fact, this year four students will be staying in two classes next week.  We visited a variety of classes such as Rainbow class or mixed-grade class from 1st to 3rd graders who stay with the same teacher for 3 years.  Bunkyo students learned how the teacher, Lisa, orchestrated each day to embrace the needs of the entire class of children with different age groups.  We always wonder if it should be the same for all students or individually customized.

子どもたちはみんなフレンドリーで、学生たちの周りに寄ってきてくれます。そして、休み時間には一緒に遊ぼうと誘ってくれます。それは学生たちの得意分野です！

Children there were nice and friendly to Bunkyo students.  They invited our students over to play together during morning recess.  Our students are very good at playing outside with young children!

こちらは、1年生の算数の授業中でした。簡単な足し算・引き算を様々な方法で導き出すのですが、このくらいの算数ならついていけましたね。数字は万国共通のコミュニケーションツールと言えます！ しかし、先生が説明している算数用語は理解が難しかったようですね。

We also observed the first graders learning math.  Our students seemed to keep up with the class where children were learning addition and subtraction although they had a hard time understanding what the teacher explained in class.   Math is a powerful tool for global understanding and communication!

２回目の英語の授業でした。いろいろやっていましたが、最後の方にやったのは絵本読みの練習でした。自分で相手に読み聞かせをしたい本を選ぶことから始めていました。子どもたちは自分で選んだ本を最後まで読み通す率が一番高いようなのです。学生たちにもそれは当てはまるかもしれません！ どうも、短い本を選ぶ傾向にありましたが、短い本でも難しい単語が多い場合もあり、選ぶ基準が難しい！

In the second ESL class this afternoon, they practiced reading children’s books.  First, they need to choose books that they want to read to their friends.  The books children are most likely to finish are the ones they pick out themselves.  So it may be true to my students as well!  They tend to choose short books but sometimes short books might have more unknown words to them than long books might.  So it’s tricky!

やっと決まって、それぞれ読み聞かせが始まりました。しかし、なかなか流れるように読めていないようでした。単語の発音がわからないため、よく止まってしまうのでしょう。その結果、ストーリーの内容がわからなかった組が多かったようです。絵本の内容を理解するためには、少なくても、基本となる単語を知らないと子どもの絵本でも難しいようです。単語力を増すには何度も使って覚えていくしかないですね。フィールドワークで、ここに来ている理由はそのためだったのでは?!

They were reading the books they chose to their friends.  However, most students had a hard time just pronouncing some words so they needed to stop a lot.  Consequently, they didn’t understand what the story in the book was all about.  They have to understand the words they are reading in order to comprehend the story, and that is where vocabulary is very important.  Students, grow your vocabulary by using it.  That’s the very reason you are here for!
