文京学院大学ではアメリカ人チューターが在籍し、授業のアシスタントやチャットラウンジなどで文京生の英語学習のサポートをしています。前回のSophiaに続き、今回は11月に来日したばかりの「Merthan Robert Joseph(ニックネームはR.J)」さんのご紹介をいたします。
彼もSophia同様、姉妹校の「セントベネディクト・セントジョンズ大学」の卒業生です。2018年には交換留学生として約4か月文京学院大学で勉強をしていたので、見覚えのある文京生もいるかもしれません。

Hello, my name is R.J. Merthan and I am a tutor in the GSI office. Please call me R.J!
I graduated from the College of Saint Benedict/Saint John’s University in Minnesota, U.S.A., this past May. My major was Hispanic Studies, and my minor was Japanese. I am very excited to start working as a BGU tutor! My journey to arrive here in Japan was very long and complicated because of the Coronavirus, but now I am looking forward to meeting and working with BGU students. I have been to BGU before as an exchange student in 2018, so maybe I will seem familiar to some of you. And if we have not met, I am looking forward to making new friends as well.

私はミネソタにあるセントベネディクト・セントジョンズ大学を今年の5月に卒業しました。主専攻はヒスパニック研究、副専攻で日本語を勉強していました。文京学院大学で働けることにとてもワクワクしています。新型コロナの影響で、日本に来られるまで多くの時間と複雑な手続きがありましたが、やっと文京生と会えるようになるので楽しみです。2018年に交換留学生として、文京学院大学で勉強していたので、文京生の中には私の事を知っている人もいるかもしれません。これから初めて会う人も、新たしく友達になれるのを楽しみにしています。

Some of my hobbies include ice hockey and soccer. I am from Minnesota, and ice hockey is very popular there. I grew up playing both of these sports very often. I also grew up speaking 2 languages, English and Spanish, because my mother is a Spanish teacher. In college, I studied Japanese for 3 years since it was my minor. It is one of my goals to improve my Japanese language skill.

私の趣味はアイスホッケーとサッカーです。ミネソタではアイスホッケーがとても人気で、子供のころからアイスホッケーやサッカーをよくしていました。他に子どもの時からしていることと言えば、母がスペイン語の先生なので、小さい時から英語とスペイン語の二つの言語を学んできました。スペイン語の他にも、大学の副専攻で日本語も3年間勉強してきました。日本語力をもっと伸ばすことが私の目標の一つです。

When I was a student, I was very lucky to be able to study abroad 2 times. First, I studied abroad in Viña del Mar, Chile in South America for one semester. If you know Sophia Sura, the other tutor, we were actually in the same group in Chile. It was a lot of fun living with a host family and getting to learn Chilean culture. As I mentioned before, I also studied abroad here at BGU for one semester. I am excited to have the chance to live here again and to see old friends and make new ones.

学生だった時は海外留学に二度行くことができてとてもラッキーでした。一度目は南アメリカのチリにあるビニャ・デル・マールという街に一セメスター行きました。実はもう一人のチューターのSophiaも同じタイミングでチリに留学していたので、現地では同じグループでした。ホストファミリーと一緒に生活しながら、チリ文化を学ぶことはとても楽しかったです。二度目の留学は先ほど少し言いましたが、文京学院で一セメスター勉強しました。もう一度日本に住み、前からの友人に会ったり新しい友達を作る機会を得られたことに興奮しています。

On campus at CSB/SJU, I had many on-campus jobs, such as working in the kitchens or filming sports matches for the school. I also tried to stay active by playing intramural soccer with my friends. As part of the Japanese program I learned a lot about Japanese language and culture from my teachers as well as Japanese exchange students. I also acted as a peer mentor for BSIS students this past February.

学生時代は大学のカフェテリアのキッチンで働いたり、大学のスポーツの試合の様子を写真で撮るアルバイトをしたりしていました。バイトをしていないときは大学内で友達とサッカーをしていました。日本語プログラムの一環として先生や日本からの留学生から日本語と日本文化を沢山学びました。その他には今年の2月には文京大学の特別留学プログラムで来た学生のメンターを務めました。

If I could give some advice to BGU students, I would encourage everyone to make the most out of their time as a student. I want everyone to give their best effort to be involved, whether that is in your clubs, studying, spending time with friends or meeting new ones. For those of you who are studying English, I would recommend that you use the resources that you have, like chat lounge, meeting foreign exchange students, and making international friendships.
We can work hard together! I hope to see everyone soon.

もし、文京生にアドバイスができるとしたら、学生としての時間を最大限利用することをお勧めします。部活でも、勉強でも、友達との時間でも、新しい出会いでも、学生の皆さんには全力で関わってほしいと思います。英語を勉強している人にはチャットラウンジや留学生との交流、外国人と友達になることなど、あるものを全て活用して欲しいです。
