Abstract　(講演概要)：

In the age of globalization, languages go away from the hands of their native speakers. In this lecture, I will discuss how English, with its linguistic and cultural diversity, may be taught as a means of international communication beyond the Anglo-American framework, as to the issues of materials, methodologies, and models. I will also present my own pedagogical practice in my university classes, where I use real-time news across the world for the purpose of allowing the students to participate in the global community of users of English as an international language.

 

国際化時代の特徴のひとつは、言語がその母語話者の手を離れていくことである。そして今日、この現象は特に英語において顕著である。母語話者の言語的・文化的枠組を超えた多様性を有する「国際英語」の学びはどうあるべきか、教材・教授法・言語モデルなどの面から考える。また、授業当日の世界各国の英語ニュースをリアルタイムで扱う授業など、本講演者による国際英語の具体的な教育実践についても紹介する。

 

Backgrounds (講演者略歴):

Nobuyuki Hino is Professor, Graduate School of Language and Culture, Osaka University, Japan.

He also served as a lecturer for the radio English education program English for Millions from 1989 to 1992. He is well-known as the author of TOEFL de 650-ten: Watashi no eigoshugyo (1987) in which he analyzed his own experiences in learning English. His academic publications include chapters in influential books such as Cross-Cultural Literacy (Regents/Prentice Hall, 1992), Principles and Practices of Teaching English as an International Language (Multilingual Matters, 2012), and English as an International Language in Asia (Springer, 2012). He currently serves as the President for the Japanese Association for Asian Englishes (JAFAE) and as a director for the International Association for World Englishes (IAWE). He has received the Osaka University Award for Outstanding Contributions to General Education (Best Teacher Award) 14 times, including the 12 consecutive semesters from Spring 2006 to Fall 2011.

 

東京国際大学助教授を経て、1990年から大阪大学教員。現在、大阪大学大学院言語文化研究科教授。1989年から1992年にかけてラジオ『百万人の英語』講師を兼任。一般書として『トーフルで650点：私の英語修業』（南雲堂）、専門書（共著）としてCross-Cultural Literacy (Regents/Prentice Hall), Principles and Practices of Teaching English as an International Language (Multilingual Matters), English as an International Language in Asia (Springer)など。現在、日本「アジア英語」学会会長、International Association for World Englishes理事。ベストティーチャー賞としての「大阪大学共通教育賞」を、2006年度前期から2011年度後期まで12学期間連続（通算14回）受賞。
