文京学院大学ではアメリカ人チューターが在籍し、授業のアシスタントやチャットラウンジなどで文京生の英語学習のサポートをしています。本当であれば昨年8月に来日予定だった新チューターのMs. Amberですが、新型コロナウイルスの水際対策による入国制限の関係で、来日ができずにおりました。そんなAmberですが、ようやく来日が叶い晴れてスタッフの一員になりましたので、自己紹介をしてもらいます。
例年のチューター同様、彼女も姉妹校の「セントベネディクト・セントジョンズ大学」の卒業生です。これまでアメリカ留学に行った文京生のお世話をしてくれていたので、見覚えのある方もいるかもしれません。

Hello, my name is Amber Rudenick and I am a tutor in the GSI office. I graduated from the College of Saint Benedict/Saint John’s University (CSB/SJU) in Minnesota, U.S.A., last May. My major was Biochemistry, and my minors were Japanese and Asian Studies. I am really looking forward to working at BGU as a tutor, and meeting all of the BGU students! Unfortunately due to Coronavirus, I have had to wait a long time until I was able to enter Japan, but that makes me even more excited to finally be here now! When I was in college I worked at CSB/SJU’s Center for Global Education, so you may recognize me because I have often worked with BGU students in the past. Last year I assisted with the BSIS online program, and in past years I have worked as an orientation leader and mentor for exchange students who come to CSB/SJU, as well as designing and hosting events and excursions for the international students on campus. I am looking forward to meeting all the BGU students, so please stop by the GSI office and say “hi”!

こんにちは、GSIオフィスのチューターのAmber Rudenick （アンバー ルデニック）です。私は、昨年5月にアメリカのミネソタ州にあるセントジョンズ・セントベネディクト大学（CSB/SJU）を卒業しました。主専攻は生化学で副専攻が日本語とアジア地域の研究でした。文京のチューターとして働くことを、そして文京生と会えるのをとても楽しみにしていました。残念ながら新型コロナウイルスの影響で、来日まで長い時間を待たなければなりませんでしたが、やっと日本に来られてとてもワクワクしています！CSBSJUのCenter for Global Education（文京のGSIオフィスのようなもの）で働いており、その際、留学に来ていた文京生とよく会っていたので、私を知っている人もいるかもしれませんね。昨年はBSIS（CSBSJUの文京生特別プログラム）のオンラインプログラムを手伝い、過去数年はCSB/SJUに来る交換留学生のオリエンテーションリーダーやメンターとして、キャンパス内の留学生のためのイベントやエクスカーションを企画・主催してきました。文京生の皆さんと会えるのを楽しみにしているので、GSIオフィスに立ち寄って、気軽に話しかけて下さいね。

Some of my hobbies include playing the piano, playing volleyball, traveling, and collecting house plants. I have around 100 house plants at home that I take care of, and over 60 different varieties! I have traveled to 10 different countries, and hope to continue to visit more! At my house I have a black and brown miniature dachshund named Gracie, who is 12 years old!

趣味は、ピアノ、バレーボール、旅行、観葉植物集めなどです。自宅には100個くらいの観葉植物があって、60種類以上育てていました。今まで10カ国を旅してきましたが、これからももっと色々な国に行きたいと思っています。実家には、黒と茶色のミニチュアダックスフンドのグレイシーがいます！この子は12歳です。

When I was a student, I was able to study abroad at Southwest University in Chongqing, China for a science research program during the summer of 2018! During my time there I used PCR to study tuberculosis antibiotic resistance. Southwest University was very large, and the campus was over 6 square kilometers, with over 50,000 students! I am excited to work at BGU, which with its smaller campus size, I will be able to connect with the students much more on an individual level!

学生時代の2018年の夏に中国・重慶にある西南大学に科学研究プログラムで留学することができました。滞在中、私はPCRを使って結核の抗生物質耐性を研究していました。西南大学はとても大きく、キャンパスは6平方キロメートル以上あり、5万人以上の学生が在籍していました！キャンパスの規模が小さいBGUで働くことで、学生たちと個人レベルでもっとつながることができると思うと、今から楽しみで仕方ありません!

On campus at CSB/SJU, I had many on-campus jobs, such as Chemistry Tutor, Chemistry Teachers Assistant, Chemical Stockroom Worker, and student worker for the Center for Global Education. I also co-hosted many of the events for our exchange students at school and volunteered with the Japanese students to help out at the annual Festival of Cultures at the Japan booth! These opportunities led me to make many friends and connections from BGU and from all around the world, in addition to learning so much from the students.

CSB/SJUのキャンパスでは、化学のチューター、化学授業のアシスタント、化学品保管室勤務、国際教育センターでの学生バイトなど、多くの仕事を経験しました。また、学校では交換留学生のためのイベントを主催したり、毎年開催される文化祭の日本ブースで、日本人学生と一緒にボランティアをしたりしました。このような機会を通じて、文京生や世界中の友人とコネクションを作ることができ、さらに学生たちから多くのことを学びました。

The advice I’d give to BGU students is that your college time will go by very fast, so you should enjoy it and make the most out of your time and resources! Once Coronavirus started while I was still in school, I wasn’t able to enjoy time with friends, or see my classmates or teachers in person. All my classes were online, so the time was very isolating and I wasn’t able fully enjoy my junior and senior year. So now that we can finally see each other, I urge everyone to get involved through their studies, clubs, social events, and spending time with friends! For those who are studying English, please meet with foreign exchange students, and come to the chat lounge so we can have a good conversation in English! Let’s work hard to learn English! I hope to meet everyone soon!

文京生にアドバイスするとしたら、大学生活はあっという間に過ぎてしまうので、学生生活を楽しんで、自分の時間と資源を最大限に活用した方が良いということです。 私が学生だった頃、コロナウイルスが発生すると、友人との時間を楽しんだり、クラスメートや先生に直接会ったりすることができなくなりました。授業はすべてオンラインだったので、その時間はとても孤独で、大学3年生と4年生の時間を十分に楽しむことができませんでした。なので皆さんには、勉強やクラブ、社会的なイベント、友人と過ごす時間などに積極的に参加してほしいと思います。英語を勉強している人は、留学生と会って、チャットラウンジに来れば、英語で楽しく会話することができますよ。頑張って英語を勉強しましょうね！早
