文京学院大学ではアメリカ人チューターが在籍し、授業のアシスタントやチャットラウンジなどで文京生の英語学習のサポートをしています。今回は本学で働き始めて2年目の「Sophia Sura」さんの紹介をいたします。彼女は姉妹校の「セントベネディクト・セントジョンズ大学」の卒業生で、現地アメリカでも留学に来ていた文京生と交流を育んでいました。チューターの存在は知っているけれど、どんな人なんだろう？という方は是非ご覧ください。

Hello,my name is Sophia Sura and I am a tutor in the GSI Office.
I graduated from the College of Saint Benedict/Saint John’s University in Minnesota, U.S.A. Many BGU students choose to study abroad at CSBSJU, so I was happy to come work at BGU who has a partnership with my home university. I first came to Japan in August of 2019, so I have been here for one year. I was very nervous to come live here because I didn’t know what to expect and I don’t speak Japanese. I have made many new friends and visited many beautiful places, such as Hiroshima, Kyoto and Nikko, so I am definitely enjoying my time here! Tokyo is an amazing city and I really like living here.

こんにちは、GSIオフィスでチューターをしているSophia Suraです。
私はアメリカのミネソタにあるセントベネディクト・セントジョンズ大学の卒業生です。たくさんの文京生が私の母校に留学に来ていたので、今、文京学院大学で働けていることに幸せを感じています。日本に来たのは2019年の8月なのであっという間に一年が過ぎました。来日したばかりの頃は自分にどんなことを期待されているのか、日本語が話せないでも大丈夫なのか、ととても緊張していました。でも、日本で新しい友人が沢山でき、広島や京都や日光のような美しい場所に訪れたりしているうちに、日本の生活をとても楽しでいることに気づきました。東京は素晴らしい街で、ここに住むのがとても好きです。

In my free time, I enjoy doing many things around Tokyo. I really love kpop, especially BTS, I like going to restaurants and trying new foods, and I enjoy going to cafes around the city. I often go to different parts of Tokyo and just walk around and explore unknown areas.

時間がある時は東京で色んなことをして楽しんでいます。私はKpop、特にBTSが大好きです。他にもレストランに行って新しい食べ物に挑戦したり、カフェに行ったりすることも好きです。私はよく東京をあちこち歩き回って、知らない場所を探索しています。

When I was a student, I studied abroad in Vina del Mar, Chile in South America. I lived with a host family near the ocean and visited other countries, like Peru and Argentina. During the first month of being there, I experienced a lot of homesickness and I really missed my family. I video called them often which helped a lot and I tried to make many new friends so that I would have fun and not miss my family as much. It was difficult to live with a host family because I had never met them before, but they were so kind and I was also able to practice my spanish always with them!

大学生だった時、南アメリカのチリのビニャ・デル・マールというところに語学留学に行きました。海の近くの家でホームステイをしていました。留学中ペルーやアルゼンチンにも遊びに行きました。初めの一か月は強いホームシックにかかり家族にとても会いたくなりました。そんな時はよく家族とテレビ電話をしたり、寂しい気持ちにならないように友達作りに励んだりしました。初めて会うホストファミリーと一緒に住むことは大変でしたが、とても優しい家族でしたし、いつも私のスペイン語の勉強に付き合ってくれました！

While living on campus, I was a part of the Spanish Club and the campus news team. I had an on-campus job and worked in the office of Center for Global Education. I also had an off-campus job at a radio station and I helped report the news multiple days a week!

アメリカの大学にいたときはスペイン語クラブと学生記者クラブに所属していました。大学のキャンパス内のグロバール教育センターオフィスでアルバイトもしていました。それ以外にも、学外で週に数日ラジオ局でニュースのレポーターの補助の仕事もしていたんですよ。

If I could give some advice to BGU students, I would say make sure to take advantage of everything the university has to offer: join clubs, make friends, and study hard because you will miss school after you graduate! If you are studying English or another foreign language, study abroad when it is possible. You will learn so much and improve your language skills. I also recommend making friends with foreigners, whether they are students or otherwise. It’s always nice to have friends all around the world!

もし文京生にアドバイスができるとすれば、大学が提供しているすべてのものを活用してほしい、ということです。大学を卒業したあと大学生活が恋しくなるので、クラブ活動や友達作り、勉強に励んでほしいです。もし、あなたが英語やそのほかの言語を勉強しているなら、可能であれば留学に行くことを勧めます。また、学生、社会人に関わらず外国人と友達になることをお勧めします。世界中に友達がいるのはいいことですよ！
